Juniper ground covers can be a fantastic addition to your garden in San Antonio, Texas. Junipers offer an evergreen groundcover with unique texture for year-round visual interest in your landscape. These low-growing plants not only provide excellent ground coverage but also add a pop of color and texture to your landscape.

Groundcover junipers typically grow an average of 6″-12″ high and around 5′ wide. Remember that when it comes to groundcovers, they tend to grow slowly. The old adage is first year they sleep, second year they creep, and third year they leap!

Some of our favorite juniper groundcovers are: Blue Pacific (one of the best for our San Antonio area). This juniper has a gorgeous blue-green hue and spreads in a low, trailing fashion. It holds up well through the heat of summer and looks good while doing it. Another popular favorite is Blue Rug, which totes the same growing habit as Blue Pacific, but has more of a silvery-blue hue.

While we are focusing more on groundcovers, junipers also range in sizes from smaller more compact shrubs to taller varieties that could be used for privacy screens. The evergreen nature of junipers is a sought after quality for many homeowners in San Antonio that want to make sure they some ‘green’ through all seasons.

Growing Conditions for Junipers

Juniper ground covers thrive in full sun to partial shade, so make sure they receive adequate sunlight for optimal growth. These plants are known for their cold tolerance, making them a great choice for San Antonio’s variable climate.

In terms of soil, juniper ground covers prefer well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Adding organic matter like compost can help improve soil quality and drainage. As for fertilizer, a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring can provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.

When it comes to watering juniper ground covers in San Antonio’s hot climate, it’s crucial to ensure they receive enough moisture, especially during the dry summer months. However, these plants also need well-draining soil to prevent root rot. To help them get established, water them deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth.

Controlling Pests and Disease on Junipers

While juniper ground covers are generally low-maintenance, they can be susceptible to certain pests and diseases, the most common being spider mites or rust. Regularly inspecting your plants and providing proper air circulation can help prevent these issues.

Spider mites can be held at bay by keeping your plants healthy and well watered throughout the hottest season in San Antonio. Spider mites generally attack plants that are in decline or neglected, so simply paying attention to your junipers and offering regular maintenance might allow you to avoid these pests. See our control suggestions for spider mites here.

Rust can be thwarted with preventative spraying of copper fungicide products. Repeat applications are generally advised, so read the  product label thoroughly.

Consider using juniper ground covers along slopes, in rock gardens, or as borders to add visual interest and structure to your landscape. With their versatility and beauty, these plants can be a delightful addition to your outdoor space in San Antonio.
