Looking for a plant that brings vibrant blooms and beautiful foliage to your garden when summer starts winding down? Little Volcano Lespedeza (Lespedeza thunbergii ‘Little Volcano’) is a beautiful ornamental shrub that puts on a spectacular show from late summer into fall.
Graceful, arching branches become covered in brilliant reddish-purple, pea-shaped flowers in late summer/early fall. This creates a cascading display of color when many other flowering shrubs are beginning to fade. As temperatures cool, its delicate green foliage shifts into gorgeous shades of golden yellow. With the milder winter sun, this creates a warm glow of seasonal interest for your landscape.
Non-Native, but Non-Invasive!
Uh-oh! Hope I haven’t lost you here. Here at Rainbow Gardens we love our native plants. But we are also big fans of plants (even non-natives) that behave well here in San Antonio.
Although Little Volcano lespedeza is not native to Texas, it has an important characteristic that sets it apart from other invasive lespedeza species. It is a sterile cultivar that does not produce viable seed. This means it won’t spread aggressively through seed production like some of its relatives.
Growing Little Volcano Lespedeza in San Antonio
This low-maintenance shrub is surprisingly tough once established, tolerating heat, drought, and less-than-perfect soils. Its fountain-like growth habit makes it especially attractive in large garden beds, along slopes, or cascading over retaining walls.
Its late-season flowers are also attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, providing a valuable nectar source as the growing season winds down.

Is it deer resistant?
Hi Victoria,
It is listed as a deer resistant plant from most growers. Younger growth could be nibbled if food sources are scarce, and of course it always depends on the herd. But in general, the texture of the foliage is unappealing to deer.
